Diabetes Prevention Program
Gateway Region YMCA
The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) is based on the landmark Diabetes Prevention Program led by the National Institutes of Health and supported by the Centers for Disease Control. The DPP has shown that with lifestyle changes and modest weight reduction, a person with prediabetes can prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes. The program strives to help participants achieve two primary goals: (1) Reduce body weight by 7%, and (2) Engage in regular physical activity. Through the program, participants receive support and encouragement from both trained lifestyle coaches and fellow classmates in developing a plan for improving and maintaining overall well-being.
Blood Pressure Monitoring Program
Gateway Region YMCA
YMCA’s Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring Program is designed to help participants with hypertension lower their blood pressure by following an evidence-based program that combines blood pressure self-monitoring, nutrition education seminars, and personalized support. Participants will receive support from trained Healthy Heart Ambassadors and for a four-month duration will be encouraged to: (1) Measure and record their blood pressure at least two times per month, (2) Attend two personalized consultations per month, and (3) Attend monthly Nutritional Education Seminars.
Wellness Lives HereSM
American Diabetes Association (ADA)
This powerful initiative is designed to inspire and fuel our nation's healthful habits at work and beyond. With year-round opportunities, Wellness Lives Here℠ helps companies, organizations, and communities educate and motivate people to adopt healthful habits to reduce the impact of type 2 diabetes and other obesity-related illnesses. The program includes educational resources, activity ideas, environmental tips, and other resources to teach employees the skills to better control, delay, or stop diabetes and other obesity-related health problems.
Colorectal Cancer Toolkit
American Cancer Society (ACS)
Colorectal cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer death in the United States among men and women combined, yet it’s one of the most preventable. The business community has an important role to play in promoting colorectal cancer screening and much to gain through saving on health care costs, promoting a healthy workforce with increased productivity, and demonstrating corporate social responsibility. Join the national effort to get 80% of adults ages 50 and older regularly screened for colorectal cancer.
Content Subscription Service
American Cancer Society (ACS)
Through the Content Subscription Service, the American Cancer Society offers employers free electronic toolkit subscriptions that support the health and wellness needs of employees with information about cancer prevention and early detection, and support services and resources for those facing cancer. Distributed in advance of the National Health Observance Calendar, the Society’s online subscription service can be used by your human resources, internal communications, and wellness departments to implement a variety of health and cancer awareness campaigns and show employees that you are committed to helping them stay well and get well.
Diabetes Alert Day® E-Toolkit
American Diabetes Association (ADA)
American Diabetes Association Diabetes Alert Day® on March 22 is a "wake-up call" asking Americans to take the Type 2 Diabetes Risk Test to find out if they are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes. Companies, organizations, and communities can play an important role by encouraging their employees and members to take the Diabetes Risk Test, share it with family and friends, and participate in workplace-friendly activities that demonstrate ways to lower their risk for diabetes. The free e-toolkit provides ideas and resources to help organizations get employees engaged in the topic.
Lung Disease Workplace Resources
American Lung Association (ALA)
Lung disease, which includes asthma, COPD, respiratory illnesses, and smoking-related conditions, is one of the most common and costly of all health problems. Businesses can make small changes to the workplace environment to support employee lung health, including focusing on indoor air quality, providing quit smoking resources for employees, or educating those living with a chronic lung disease. The American Lung Association offers comprehensive support to help employers adopt and implement workplace policies and programs that support a healthy work environment while contributing to a healthier corporate bottom line.
American Stroke Month and World Stroke Day Toolkits
American Heart Association (AHA)
American Stroke Month (in May) and World Stroke Day (on October 29th) were created to underscore the serious nature and high rates of stroke, raise awareness of the prevention and treatment of the condition, and ensure better care and support for survivors. Stroke is the #2 cause of death worldwide. Although largely treatable, many people miss the signs and are too late in seeking help. These toolkits contain email messaging, social media content, infographics, educational quizzes, and other resources to help organizations inform employees of life-saving tips to prevent and identify stroke symptoms.
National Wear Red Day® Toolkit
American Heart Association (AHA)
National Wear Red Day® is a public awareness day the first Friday of each February, urging women, people from all walks of life, businesses, towns, schools, the media, buildings, and landmarks to “go red” and “glow red” to bring attention to the leading killers of women – heart disease and stroke. Companies can get involved by encouraging employees to wear read, sharing educational information about the prevention and treatment of heart disease and stroke, or setting up a fundraising campaign for research and other life-saving efforts. Free, downloadable materials are available to help organizations build awareness on this day.
Healthy Hearts @ Work
St. Louis Area Business Health Coalition (BHC)
Healthy Hearts @ Work (HH@W) is a free health education resource for member companies aimed at increasing employee awareness about high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease. Funded by the Missouri Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention Program, HH@W includes five customizable program options that provide employers with simple, time efficient activities to educate employees about high blood pressure, identify cases of uncontrolled high blood pressure, and encourage worksite policies supporting health and wellness.
Chronic-Disease Self-Management Workshop
Saint Louis County Department of Public Health
The mission of the Community Health Promotion division unit is to promote healthy behaviors in collaboration with community partners. Experienced health educators can present onsite at local worksites on a variety of topics. The Chronic Disease Self- Management Workshop is an evidence-based curriculum developed by Stanford University. Over six-weeks, participants learn self-management skills for certain chronic diseases such as asthma, diabetes, arthritis, and heart disease.

St. Luke's Hospital can provide educational seminars, created and presented by health professionals, on a wide array of topics. These include diet and nutrition, fitness and exercise, general health, heart health, women's health, cancer/oncology, sleep disorders, and stress management.
Lunch and Learn Sessions
Visiting Nurse Association of Greater St. Louis
Nurses are available to come onsite to local workplaces and provide customized presentations on a variety of health and wellness topics, including: Living Well with Diabetes; Eating Healthy on the Run; Managing Stress; Making Healthy Food Choices; Living Well with High Blood Pressure; and Easy Ways to Increase Your Activity.
Health Education Workshops
University of Missouri Extension
MU Extension’s Nutrition and Health Specialists are available to provide workshops and courses based on the latest scientific evidence to improve employee health and well-being. The following topic areas are available: balance and fall prevention, strength training for older adults, healthy food shopping and preparation, food canning and preservation, mindfulness, and chronic disease and diabetes self-management.
